  Milltown 4th of July

Fourth of July

The Annual Fourth of July as usual makes for a long day for the Milltown Fire Department and this year was no exception.

The day began with the preparation of the post-parade picnic at Engine Company.  The cooking was handled by a combination of Department members and a tremendous job was done.  A special thanks to Chief Glenn Micale from North Brunswick as he assisted as well.

The parade stepped off and as usual we received a generous reception from the Borough residents.  A special award was given to our most recent 50 year member Sam Carasso who was driven on the 1921 LaFrance by his son and Ex-Chief Joel Carasso.  The parade was stopped was stopped at the reviewing stand for the presentation.  The detail parted and the 1921 was driven up the middle.  Councilman and Fourth of July Committee Chairman Randy Farkas read the plaque prior to the presentation.

Post the parade the annual picnic at Engine Company ensued.  A record 17 Fire Departments were in attendance this year.  Trophies were awarded after judging was completed as follows:

The day concluded with the annual fireworks.  They began early due to rain.  The town was packed as usual but parking issues were worse than usual.  The event concluded without incident.  A special thanks to our mutual aid Departments that helps us including North Brunswick, East Brunswick Independent, Brookview, South River, Helmetta and Spotswood.

  Fire Activity in Milltown

Second Quarter Department Activity
2008

As of July 5, 2008 the current total fire calls for the 2008 year is 55.  This quarter has had the typical mix of calls including CO alarms, alarm activations and turnpike calls.

The major event this quarter happened on June 24th at Joyce Kilmer School when the roofing materials being used for renovation at the school caught fire and propane cylinders being used were engulfed.  One tank was heated to the point of BLEVE, blowing out windows in the school and blowing burning debris to the roof of the structure.  Fortunately no one was injured though Ladder 73 as well as Chief’s Bush and Belonis were in close proximity.  Assistance from East Brunswick Independent and North Brunswick was required.  Investigations are pending.

Memorial Day 2008

The Annual Memorial Day ceremonies were held on May 26, 2008.  The day began with a short Service at Eureka Hose Company with the placing of a wreath at the Monument.  The silent march across town followed to Eureka Engine Company.

Memorial flowers were placed on the Main St. Monument by the Milltown Fire Department, Milltown Exempt Firemen’s Association and the Milltown Ladies Auxiliary.

Services continued with the playing of TAPS and Amazing Grace on the bagpipes live.  The service concluded with the reading of the flower placements on the monument by the families and friends of our departed members.

Following the services pictures were taken of the Department as it is the second year of Chief Brian Bush’s term.

MFD Training Continues

Two of our newest members have been attending Firefighter I at the Middlesex County Fire Academy.  Firefighter Michael Perlson has recently completed his basic training and firefighter Thomas Dumanski will have completed his training before our next Exempt meeting.  They will both be part of the upcoming graduating class at the Academy.

There were four member of the Milltown Fire Department that have recently completed pump operations training at the Middlesex Fire Academy as well over this past quarter.  As things change in Fire Service this training is essential and their commitment is much appreciated.

Annual Charles Garbarini Golf Outing

The Annual Golf outing was met with a new condition this year.  The sun was bright in the sky but the temperatures were in the high 90’s.  The 121 golfers in attendance had the spirit intended and the event persevered.

Attendees this year included Mrs. Andrea Garbarini and members of her family, our brothers from FDNY to the count of 20, our roommates from Iselin #11, a strong showing of support from the Milltown Fire Department and several friends and family.  This year’s proceeds will be offered to COSAC of New Jersey (The Autism Foundation) which will be presented to them at their Annual golf outing on July 15th.  The proceeds became larger than anticipated when the winner of the 50 / 50, Rob Bye donated his money back to the cause in the amount of $700.

The winners of this year’s event are listed on the Golf Outing page of this site.

A special thank you to our sponsors as without them this event cannot happen.  The Committee as without their efforts and support things would not run as smoothly as it does every year.

We look forward to next year’s event and information will be posted on the website.
