MFD Annual Scholarships

Three years after it’s founding, Elwood Boyce served as the Foreman (Rank of Chief today) of the Milltown Fire Department.  In August, 1914 the members of the Milltown Fire Department responded to a fire at the Parsons Snuff Mill near the current Farrington Dam in North Brunswick.  After fighting the fire, Foreman Boyce drank contaminated water from the brook and 3 weeks later, died from Typhoid Fever.  Foreman Boyce was 31 years old and left behind a wife and a son.  

Lt. Charles Garbarini was a firefighter who faithfully served the Fire Department of New York until his tragic death on Sept. 11, 2001.  Lt. Garbarini died at the World Trade Center in a valiant attempt to save both lives and property.  Lt. Garbarini left behind a wife and two sons. 

The Milltown Fire Department donates to various charities including this scholarship with money raised through multiple fundraisers, including a golf outing held in memory of Lt. Garbarini.  

In memory of Foreman Boyce, one $1250 scholarship is being awarded to a high school senior from Milltown who plans to further his/her education.  In memory of Lt. Garbarini, one $1000 scholarship is being awarded to a high school senior from Milltown who plans on continuing his/her education.  

The MFD is a volunteer organization that takes great pride in our service to the community. Candidates need to write at least a 150 word paragraph that should discuss the importance of volunteerism. The applicant should talk specifically about how he/she has given back to their community and how he/she plans to continue doing so in the future.

The Milltown Fire Department is happy to announce the a addition of a $500 scholarship which is generously donated by a Milltown Fire Department family for a high school senior from Milltown who plans on continuing his/her education. 

The famous children’s tv show personality Mr. Rogers is quoted as saying “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping”.  

The mission of the Milltown Fire Department and its members is to help others no   matter what.  Candidates need to write an essay of at least 150 words about what the quote above means to them and how they live out this quote in their everyday lives by demonstrating compassion and empathy in action.

These scholarships require completion of the Google form application linked below which includes 2 short essays, each a minimum of 150 words (1/2 page min.) based on the 2 prompts that were provided above. 

Winners will be chosen based on the strength of their applications.  All personal information is removed when reviewed by the scholarship committee which makes the process unbiased and fair when selecting winners. 

This application and associated materials are due no later than May 15, 2025.
